Maine
A few
final words on Maine. I enjoyed the people of Maine. They made the
rough
weather a lot more tolerable. A particularly memorable visit was had at
the
Newton Brook rest stop near Rumsford, ME. Margaret, a very nice woman
from Nova
Scotia stopped to chat with me for a spell, when she walked up she
offered a
bottle of water, always a pleasant gift to a touring cyclist in the
middle of
nowhere. She and her husband had just finished a nice canoe trip and
were
heading home through Maine. Her husband works for the Forestry
Department and
was studying the local cedar trees. Margaret and I chatted about
canoeing and
traveling and exploring and it was a nice diversion in the middle of an
otherwise wet, cold and somewhat lonely stretch of road.
It was
after talking with Margaret that I remembered a comment several friends
made
prior to the departure of my trip. They, as well as I, were a little
concerned
that it may get a bit lonely crossing the country on a bicycle. Well, I
have to
say that I've had few lonely moments since the trip started, and
meeting nice
people like Margaret makes the trip the joy that it is. I should also
add that
Newton Brook was a very pretty rest stop, just the kind you would hope
to see
in a forested and mountainous area like West Central Maine.
In
Closing, I am glad to have the Nor Easter behind me, but sad to have
missed so
many great sights, I'll return again someday!

5/26/05 - 7:30 PM -- Final Update for
Maine.
Gary made it to New Hampshire. Weather has been fierce. Has found some
solace in a motel room now and then. Heavy winds and rain (Locals say
the worst Noreaster in 40 years) throughout the area. His spirits
are high and there is more westward pedaling ahead. The Noreaster
doesn't look like it will extend to New York, Michigan or South Dakota hopefully. There
will be sunny days ahead. Next updates will be found on the "NH/VT"
Link.
5/21/05 - 6:15 PM
Gary arrived Bar Harbor, Maine and has set up at first campsite and
bike
is re-assembled. All luggage arrived intact and with his person via
O'Hare and Boston. Let the Journey
Begin. The locals there tell him to head inland, that the
weather on the coast is not soon to change. Temps in the 30's and 40's
wind 30 to 40 mph and rain. There will be sunny days ahead. So quoteth
the eternal optimist. G.H. Sr.
